IRCO Upward Bound Program

We are partnering with the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization's (IRCO) Upward Bound Program to organize a panel of health professions students willing to discuss their career and educational journeys. We would like to form a team with representation from across the health professions and public health, as well as pre-health undergrads. Participation in this event could potentially lead to longitudinal mentorship roles. The event will be virtual so you do not need to be based in the Portland area. See below for a description of this program and a link to sign up.

"IRCO's Upward Bound Program is a college preparation program for students at David Douglas High School, with the goal of improving participants' academic standing and promoting success in higher education.

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education."

Hygiene4All

Hygiene4All is “a primarily houseless led organization that uses a sociocratic model of decision making to make sure our staff/ambassadors (majority houseless folks) have a say in decision making and governing of the organization. We are currently constructing a hygiene hub, which when opened on December 3rd will provide showers, bathrooms, clothing, medical supplies, and a place for folks to dispose of their trash. In addition, one of our primary focuses is bolstering the community by providing outreach to other organizations, trainings, and leadership/mentoring opportunities.”

Global Health Promise

Global Health Promise is a Portland-based organization focused on maternal health of sex workers. In the past they have had a drop-in center that provided rest, resources, and medical screenings for sex workers. Currently they provide services such as transportation to and advocacy at medical appointments, food, clothing, masks, and hand sanitizer by meeting with sex workers in the community. GHP has taken the approach of providing a large amount of resources to a small and vulnerable group of sex workers who are pregnant or parenting.

Current Opportunities:

-Outreach: GHP is in need of volunteers to find sex workers who are pregnant or mothers and let them know about the services available.

-Grant writing: GHP is also looking for volunteers, perhaps public health students, to write grants for the program. This could involve designing research projects related to maternal health of sex workers and writing grants to fund the research.
